Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is an international research driven university covering all scientific disciplines with major focus on research, education and societal service. Situated in Belgium, in the heart of Western Europe, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven has been a centre for learning for nearly six centuries. Today, it is Belgium’s largest university and, founded in 1425, one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe.
As e leading European research university and co-founder of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven offers a wide variety of international Master’s programmes, all supported by high-quality, innovative, interdisciplinary research. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is also member of Coimbra Group and Venice International University.
The university offers degree programmes at campuses in 11 Belgian cities over 14 campuses. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven has Erasmus contracts with over 400 European universities and international contracts all over the world. Close to 20% of the university’s 60,000 + students are international, representing over 140 nationalities (2021).

Since its foundation in 1986, the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Law (CBMER – www.cbmer.be) (25 persons paid staff) has developed expertise across various lines of enquiry. These include: (1) ethical, legal and social aspects of predictive medicine and genomics; (2) ethical and legal issues in care for older adults and end-of-life care; (3) ethical and legal issues in organ and tissue donation and -regeneration and organ transplantation; (4) research ethics and ethics of research; (5) legal regulation of the healthcare professions; (6) social and organizational ethics in healthcare; and (7) care ethics and nursing ethics. The CBMER offers a broad range of courses at bachelor, master, and doctoral level. The CBMER also coordinates a Master of Bioethics programme (www.masterbioethics.org) that attracts students from all around the world, as well as the annual intensive courses ‘Nursing Ethics’ and ‘Ethics in Dementia Care’.
